A Record Year For America’s Richest Self-Made Women 2024
Record-Breaking Year for America’s Richest Self-Made Women: Fortunes Soar to $154 Billion
2024 has proven to be a landmark year for America’s top self-made women. Their combined fortunes have soared by nearly 25% to a staggering $154 billion. This remarkable growth has also led to a significant increase in the minimum net worth required to make the list, which has jumped more than 35% to $300 million.
A Year of Record-Breakers
The tenth annual list of Forbes’ America’s Richest Self-Made Women highlights a few standout figures:
Diane Hendricks maintains her position at the top for the seventh consecutive year with a record-breaking fortune of $20.9 billion. Hendricks, who founded ABC Supply with her late husband in 1982, has seen her net worth climb significantly thanks to a robust 10% increase in the company’s revenues.
Elizabeth Uihlein, co-founder of packaging supplies giant Uline, experienced the biggest percentage gain this year, with her fortune surging by 81% to an estimated $6.7 billion. The increase reflects both a higher company valuation and better market conditions.
Katy Perry enters the list as a high-profile newcomer with an estimated net worth of $350 million, largely due to the sale of her music catalog.
New Faces and Notable Gains
This year’s list includes 11 new entries, among them:
- Fawn Weaver, founder of the rapidly growing whiskey brand Uncle Nearest.
- Joan Payden, the money manager and founder of Payden & Rygel, who continues to lead her firm at age 92.
The list now features a record 31 billionaires, including:
- Taylor Swift, who achieved billionaire status thanks to her Eras tour and the high value of her music catalog.
- Sheila Johnson, co-founder of BET Networks, who has seen her net worth rise due to her investments in sports franchises.
- Lisa Su, CEO of AMD, whose fortune has benefited from excitement around generative AI.
- Michelle Zatlyn, co-founder of Cloudflare, which has experienced a significant increase in its share value.
Regional Highlights
California remains the leading state for list members with 39 women, including prominent figures like Ellen DeGeneres and Ruth Porat. Texas is home to 11 members, including SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell. New York has nine members, featuring Mary Callahan Erdoes, CEO of JP Morgan Chase’s wealth management business.
Challenges and Drop-Offs
Despite the overall gains, some women have seen their fortunes decline. Whitney Wolfe Herd, founder of Bumble, saw a $120 million drop due to falling share prices. Doris Fisher, co-founder of Gap, also experienced a decrease due to her substantial donation to the Fisher Art Foundation.
The list saw the departure of 11 members from last year, including Anne Wojcicki of 23andMe and Shonda Rhimes, whose fortunes fell below the $300 million threshold.
Methodology
Forbes compiled these rankings by valuing individual assets, including stakes in public companies using stock prices from May 3, 2024. Private companies were evaluated with input from experts and comparisons to public companies. The self-made score ranges from 6 to 10, reflecting the diverse paths these women took to achieve their success.
